How To Use
Deodorization Basics
Deodorization can be one of the most complex problems to solve. Since you can’t see odour, you take your cues from the only odour detecting equipment available – your nose. Odours are affected by environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and air flow. Here are the basic steps you must complete to achieve deodorization:
- Remove the source of the odour. While this may seem obvious, the thoroughness in which this step is completed is vastly important. If there’s still odour, there’s still source.
Think of odour like campfire smoke. Theres no point dealing with the smoke if the fire’s still burning - A rule that’s often overlooked by those spraying perfumed “deodorizer” products into a stinky situation and expecting good results. This step involves removing the obvious source of the odour, and thoroughly cleaning the area around the source. Fortunately, UnStink is an excellent cleaning product too.
Speaking of cleaning, after removing the obvious odour source, the area must be properly cleaned. Think of a stinky garbage pail with decaying food stuck to the inside. The food (source) must be removed, but what of the gooey fluids (secondary source) left behind? They must be properly cleaned away for proper deodorization to occur. Fortunately, UnStink is an excellent cleaning product for removing the secondary source of odours.
- Destroying Residual Odour. Once the source is removed, and the area cleaned, any remaining “residual odour” must be dealt with. This is the odour that clings to fabrics and porous surfaces (think of the campfire smoke smell on your clothing long after the fire is doused.) Direct spray of UnStink onto fabrics, carpets, airspaces, etc. will remove this odour.
Odours on Porous Materials
Okay, so removing the source and cleaning the secondary source is fine for hard surfaces, but what about odours in porous materials like carpet, upholstery, clothing, etc?
Wet Seeks Dry Rule:
Wet things are attracted to dry things which causes absorption. Unfortunately, it also works (along with gravity) to draw liquid things as deep into dry porous materials as they possibly can.
Porous materials have challenges. How deep into the material did the source odour go? We can’t see the source, so we have to take an educated guess. Lets say someone spilled a carton of milk on your chair. The milk soaked in and is now causing a stink as the bacteria start to decay. The rule of thumb is that the UnStink product must come in contact with all of the milk in order for deodorization to occur. So, we must introduce at least as much UnStink to the chair as there was milk spilled. The UnStink will follow the same path of absorption into the chair as the milk did.
Wet In – Wet Out Rule
Another rule of thumb for cleaning is that if a liquid penetrated into a porous surface and dries, it must be re-hydrated to be removed. If it goes in wet, it must come out wet.
However, over saturation can occur causing more problems than odour. In porous materials deodorization it’s advisable to extract as much fluid as possible. Extraction can be done by blotting with a dry towel, a shop vac, or most effectively professional extraction equipment that also flush the area with clean, hot water. (Carpet and upholstery cleaning professionals also have a cool tool called a Water Claw to maximize fluid extraction.
Here are some basic steps for deodorization in porous materials:
- Blot up as much of the original mess as possible. Use dry towels, paper towels, shop vac, extraction equipment etc. with some weight behind them. Keep doing this until no more fluids can be removed.
- Introduce at least as much UnStink as there was source material. UnStink will contact the source, destroy the odour-causing bacteria, and rehydrate the original material for removal. (Pro tip: Remove the sprayer head and apply UnStink with the squirt cap.)
- Allow UnStink to dwell. This gives it time to reach the source, start to break it down and re-hydrate it. The dwell time depends on a few variables. The thickness of the porous material and the denseness of the material. Car seats (thick and dense) will take longer to penetrate than a small carpet (thinner, less dense).
- Blot/ vacuum/ extract the rehydrated source material.
- Repeat the process as necessary.
The following section describes how to use UnStink against various deodorization challenges you may face:
People & Pets
The most common odours involving people and pets are sweat and urine, followed by feces, vomit and garbage (decay).
Messy spills of food, drink, vomit, pee or poo can be dealt with by scooping up the mess followed blotting up remaining liquids. Follow with heavy spray of UnStink to the area. Scrub if necessary and blot/wipe away the final mess. Finish with a Spray & Walk Away application of UnStink for the win!
Smoke & Cooking
- Fires, tobacco, cannabis
- Cooking, grease and spices
For light odours, use UnStink to clean affected furniture, appliances, etc. Mist onto fabric, upholstery and carpets.
For restorative deodorizing, clean all walls, floors, appliances and furniture with UnStink. Apply UnStink with a ULV fogger to complete residual deodorization onto all surfaces and into duct work.
Sports Equipment
Sports equipment, running shoes, workwear are all prone to that familiar “hockey bag odour”. UnStink’s Spray & Walk Away method is a thorough application by spray to gloves, skates, shoes, helmets, pads, etc. and allowing the equipment to dry on its own over a few hours or overnight. Also use UnStink as a laundry pre-spray. A regular shock treatment bath using UnStink Gear Wash in your bathtub will go as long way to destroying deep-rooted bacteria and mildew in your sports gear that can lead to foul odours and even skin infections. Note: Do not use UnStink on leather as it may dry out and become brittle.
Skunk
Skunk odours are among the worst and most inconvenient stinks to deal with. If your pet has been sprayed, isolate them quickly and bathe with UnStink Soap. Vehicles and homes affected by skunk spray should be thoroughly cleaned with UnStink. Heavily affected clothing, collars, leashes, etc. can be soaked in UnStink for a few hours. Pre-soak clothing before laundering. People can also shower with UnStink Soap to remove the residual odours from their skin and hair.
Pet Urine
Pet urine odours, particularly those deep into carpet, underpad and upholstery can be a challenge. Locating the spots can be assisted with UV light, however remember the Iceberg Rule: a small visible spot on the top of a carpet will likely be an affected area 5x the size in the underpad and substrate. Spray (or pour) UnStink thoroughly on the spot and let it soak in and attack; or inject UnStink through the carpet to directly contact the underpad. Worst cases may involve peeling back the carpet to reveal the underpad and floor for direct treatment (or replacement of the underpad).
Tobacco & Cannabis
For light odours, use UnStink to clean affected furniture, appliances, etc. Mist onto fabric, upholstery and carpets.
For restorative deodorizing, clean all walls, floors, appliances and furniture with UnStink. Apply UnStink with a ULV fogger to complete residual deodorization onto all surfaces and into duct work.
Carpets
Pre-spray carpeted areas with UnStink using a pump sprayer. Allow to dwell for 20-30 minutes, then follow with usual hot water extraction method. Final mist onto clean carpets to freshen.
Urine – Carpets

Urine – Tile Floor
Public washrooms (particularly men’s rooms) with tile and grout floor often carry the odours of many pees gone astray of the urinal or toilet. Thoroughly spray the toilet, urinal, walls and floors with UnStink to neutralize and destroy that stench that your customers secretly talk about. Deep seated urine in grout can take several heavy applications. Hit it hard and, use a brush if necessary to scrub the grout; allow to dry on its own – do not mop it up.
Hint: When UnStink turns into a white foam, you’ve located the stinky areas!
Cooking
Use Unstink to clean away greasy deposits on walls, floors and contents. Follow with a spray onto all surfaces and into airspace as needed.
Garbage and Recycling
Remove all remaining waste from the area, and clean surfaces with UnStink. Follow up with a final spray and allow to air dry.
Mould and Mildew
For minor household mould and mildew, a spray and wipe application of UnStink will remove buildup and leave the area sanitized and smelling fresh.
Laundry
UnStink is an excellent pre-laundry spray for odours. Spray generously directly onto garments, towels, etc. and allow to sit 20-30 minutes before laundering.
Barns
Equestrians and farmers know the foul smell of barns in summer from animal urine. Remove all shavings and bedding and pump-spray UnStink directly on the stall floors to destroy the odours (watch it create a white foam while destroying the urine). Take care to avoid the use of UnStink directly onto tack and leather items, as it may cause leather to dry out.
Decay & Decomposition
Use UnStink to clean away odour sources, then mist UnStink onto all fabric areas, including headliners. Consider ULV fogging equipment to deliver UnStink into all areas including ductwork.
Vomit
Messy spills of food, drink, vomit, pee or poo can be dealt with by scooping up the mess followed blotting up remaining liquids. Follow with heavy spray of UnStink to the area. Scrub if necessary and blot/wipe away the final mess. Finish with a Spray & Walk Away application of UnStink for the win!
Feces
